    1. That Diogenes—what a card.I must say, this has to be one of the single best translations from French into English that I've encountered so far—and that the work in question is one delving into the specifics of philosophical and theological thought only makes that fact all the more impressive. Big, honking kudos to Michael Chase for his absolutely top-notch rendering work herein, and even grander, more enthusiastically Charmin™-squeezing kudos need be sounded to Pierre Hadot for providing a [...]

    2. As an undergraduate I was torn between philosophy, anthropology, mathematics and physics (I already knew that I couldn't make a career out of my interests in literature and history). But academic philosophy in the USA was then (and it appears to be unchanged in this respect today) "analytic",i.ensisted primarily of formal and abstract analysis of rather technical questions, supplemented by taking (what appeared to me to be important) questions from metaphysicset aliaand submitting them toreducti [...]

    3. This book is challenging: Hadot's writing style is holographic, one sentence can contain the whole. Each sentence requires focus and thought, and comprise large chunks of text not given to a general reading. He is superb and absolutely authoritative on historical elements and teases out the distinction between philosophical discourse and practice. The reader is left with a very clear idea of the centrality of 'askesis' to philosophy, and how 'lived' philosophy was buried by Neoplatonic theology, [...]

    5. The Spirit Of Ancient PhilosophyFor some time, I have been studying the American philosopher Josiah Royce's 1892 book "The Spirit of Modern Philosophy" which discusses the nature and value of philosophy and the role in philosophical thinking of the history of philosophy. Royce engagingly describes the history of "modern" philosophy from Spinoza through the theory of evolution and Herbert Spencer. In the course of the work, Royce develops his own philosophy of absolute idealism based on his refle [...]

    6. Ancient philosophy is described as a way of life, focused primarily on ethics (contrasted with moderns focused on abstract truth, and post-moderns deconstructing it). Fascinating discussion of how ancient philosophical schools more or less morphed into Christian monasticism.

    7. Forgot about the importance of a commute to get reading done! I just finished this book on the commuter rail to Boston. This is the first book in the Stoned Philosophers Book Club discussion group happening at a local bar near you. I am sure that I'll have much more to say after bookclub meets, but in general, I found this book to be a great place to start delving into the philosophical tradition. Since I have never formally studied philosophy, I've had a hard time figuring out where to start. U [...]

    8. Hadot provides an exhaustive look at the origins of Western Philosophy and shows how it began as a love of wisdom, not a love of argument as it's become. He provides a steady guide through some of the key figures, their schools and their askeses (practices) which all had the goal of self-knowledge. This book will change your outlook on philosophy.

Labai man tas patinka, skaičiau su dideliu malonumu. Yra dar lenkų filmas "Zmruż oczy", kuris gražiai iliustruoja tą filosofinį būvimą pasaulyje, rekomenduoju: /title/tt0379063/

    11. This book is a great companion of Foucault's last three/four lecture series (Government of the Living, Hermeneutics of the Subject, Government of Self and Others, Courage of Truth)! Unlike Foucault I found Pierre Hadot to be a trustworthy guide; his interpretations matches my recollections or takeaways. Also there are just so many easter eggs he buried into the text which was such a game to detect and dig out all of them! I love people making esoteric references when I know the references! Some m [...]

    12. Definitely the most I've learned in 281 pages. M. Hadot has here assembled an extraordinarily erudite and enlightening history and summary of ancient philosophy that should (more than) satisfy anyone looking to get into the subject. He forcefully makes the point that, in antiquity, philosophy involved a choice of a certain way of life and as such is much more directly relevant to the "art of living," to the activity of being a human being, than modern sterilized university lecture hall philosoph [...]

    14. As I worked on preparing a history of philosophy class in my new job at a Mexican university high school ("prepa"), I found Pierre Hadot's consideration of the ancient tradition of philosophy as a way of life to be especially useful and stimulating. It is rich and complex but still very readable (thanks in part to Michael Chase's translation from the French, which flows quite smoothly). Anyone with even a slight interest in philosophy would be rewarded by reading this book. I will certainly seek [...]

Viva i greci.

    17. I was initially put off by the title. I was worried that this work wouldn't present information in an intellectually engaging manner, and I was very pleasantly surprised! Pierre Hadot is incredibly insightful, brilliantly read, and writes masterfully. Well worth a read if you have interest in the Greco-Roman philosophical tradition.

    18. I thought the book explained quite well the different philosophical currents in Antiquity, but the general structure was a bit vague for me. Personnally, it was okay, but I don't think I would reread it just for pleasure.

    20. Well done overview of the various schools of thought from the pre-Socratics up to late-Antiquity. Translation is smooth and readable.

    22. A philosopher is someone who loves wisdom, someone who strives to live wisely; key here is the word "live." The ancient philosophers (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Zeno the Stoic, Diogenes the Cynic, Pyrrho the Skeptic, Plotinus and Porphyry, and those who came after them) thought that philosophy was first and foremost about a fundamental, existential commitment to live in a certain way, striving with one's being toward some ideal - and only afterwards did theoretical reasoning take plac [...]

    24. I enjoyed an opportunity to spend time thinking about the schools of ancient Greek philosophy and considering the ways in which each, to a significant extent, manifest as archetypal constellations in the night sky of human thought, certainly both as having been significant influences in the development of subsequent civilization, but also possibly as hinting at fundamental patterns in human cognition. It was engaging to dissect my development of thought using the template of the schools: The arch [...]
