wizard, a mythical sword and a group of knights are you really living So, what s this book about When Ari, a refugee from an Arab settled planet, draws Excalibur from a tree on Old Earth and an ancient cycle shudders to life, that was only the tinder The spark comes when Ari is dubbed the 42nd incarnation of king Arthur by Merlin, the backwards aging wizard whom the doom of endlessly reliving Arthur s tragic story hung on like a shawl for centuries Determination, like an electric shock, sears through Ari s whole body and whatever hesitancy might have been in her is parched away when Ari is given hope of saving her mothers and overthrowing Mercer company, a tyrannical corporation with a checkered history of suppressing their crimes like an unpleasant rumor before it had a chance to be heard. But Ari doesn t stand a chance alone She needs the collective strength of people who, like her, have borne too much and would risk no , forget nothing and show no mercy The cry of this revolution fits into the hollows of the dreams of her knights, and, together they embark on a whirlwind mission to bring peace to humankind even if it came with danger and ended in doom.Once Future is a queer and inclusive adaptation of the Arthurian legend that turns over ideas about oppression, about classism and capitalism, and, most of all, about how none can hold a candle to the most infinitesimal spark of hope, all while on a high stakes rollercoaster quest to save humanity and that s no mean feat While the story of King Arthur is used as a basic premise, the authors craftily unweave the original tale, using threads of it to inspire different characters, only to subvert the whole with lost desert civilizations, spaceships and interdimensional travel Once Future also introduces a diverse mix of characters from different backgrounds and with differing sexual orientations, all frankly discussing their identities and futures Ari is pansexual, is from an Arab settled country and has two moms, Lamarack is black, disabled and identifies as gender fluid, Merlin is basically a gay disaster, and there s also a sapphic romance between Ari and her Gweneviere.I liked how this book doesn t shy away from the harsh economic realities of everyone s lives It doesn t gloss over the fact that bad things happen and that it s awfully hard work to fix them Evil regimes come People are held captive Good people do nothing Bad people demand everything and are given even However, I think by choosing to personify Mercer with an evil CEO, Once Future misses a crucial point You re not fighting one person, you re fighting an entire system And it felt like a missed opportunity when we could have had a clearer look into the corruption of the institutions trying to smother Ari and her people. But I think the core thread of my dissatisfaction with this book is that I d been braced for a surge of wonder, and expecting it to be wrenching, but it justwasn t There were an awful lot of other bits to quibble over, and my enjoyment of the story kept bobbing under their weight For instance, there s a sort of dichotomy in terms of pacing, one that I m still uncertain how to feel about On the one hand, things happen in flurries of action, which is very exciting and engaging in a soapy sort of way, but, on the other hand, revelations occur haphazardly, awkwardly delayed and then in a rush, in such a way that a number of high stakes turns seem trite and arbitrary and characters are reduced to a single trait, their motivations wavering and switching in accordance with plot contrivance than their own development I really expected from this book than a sequence of interesting, but overtly dramatic, situations The price the book pays for this is a loss of emotional engagement on the reader s part I felt set apart from the characters emotions and that made it very difficult to care Further, I m usually perfectly content with the easily accessible writing some YA authors settle for but this one just didn t work for me at all.In the end, I just don t have any strong feelings about this book, and, as a reader, that s what I fear the most the middle ground, the lukewarm, and reading while constantly having to chase off the loose limbed lassitude that threatens to rise and overwhelm.Overall, while Once Future triumphs in term of inclusiveness and introduces a subversive and original premise, it just didn t quite commit to its potentialC kindly provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review flag 313 likesLike see review View all 23 comments Nov they expected People are afraid to stand up They re so used to Mercer deciding whether they live or die and they are scared Things don t go as planned There is a lot of fighting, scheming, and death But throughout the story, this group of friends continue to trust each other, love each other, and fight And you were the thing Mercer feared most, Gwen said, her words reaching across the rather notable distance between them A girl they couldn t control, who wouldn t stop talking That s the scariest damn thing in the universe I also need to mention the rep in this story There is so much and it all feels natural Not once does it feel like the authors were just putting it in the story to have it It wasn t forced I loved the relationships in the book.As you can probably tell by now, I loved this and cannot wait for the second book There is death of a person, death of an animal, swearing, sex, and violence in this book It s also political Just a heads up for everyone Besides the death, I thought My favorite thing about this book was the huge cast of characters The main point of views we see are from Merlin and Ari Merlin is probably my favorite character out of the whole book He has aged backwards through time, going from old man to teenager with this latest Arthur reincarnation So he s lived through our 20th 21st Century and he references SO many things from today s world and pop culture It made me chuckle a few times and I appreciated the reminders that this was definitely far in the future Ari was also a quick favorite She s badass, funny, super smart, and very witty She just brings a new, unique life to the Arthur we know from the legend Every single supporting character brings the story so much you ve got Gwen, and Kay, and Lam and Val, even Morgana Morgana, Lam and Val are my next favorite after Merlin and Ari I know that everyone will fall in love with this cast.Regarding the plot line, y all are in for a WILD ride let me tell you This plot is moving from start to finish, action to action There are literally NO dry spots in the plot Either the characters are moving, or you re being thrown a new piece of information, or a plot twist the reveals for who the incorporates multiple sexualities and gender identities into a story without relying on the we re all oppressed or it s there but in a vague sense tropes you see in the genre This is a wide cast of characters with their own unique personalities on a spectrum of sexuality and gender identity and I really appreciated what they did and what this book can do for others With that said, Once Future was a disappointment to the point where it makes me physically sad to think about This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019 and it let me down haaaaaard And I can t necessarily point to one specific reason as to why This is very much a death by a thousand cuts situation where there so many little things that just don t add up or work together that creates a lackluster story Once Future is a gender bent King Arthur retelling in while Ari must defeat the evil Mercer corporation which basically runs no less then three galaxies This book starts off strong, looking like a conscious critique of capitalism and overspending before it flinches and creates a single figurehead for Ari to stop It s odd that a book that specifically points out the uselessness of figureheads employs one so strongly throughout the story It even ends with a sequel baity ending that makes almost everything Ari and her knights a moot point I think that s the main issue with Once Future overall It s starts out strong but fizzles out as the book progresses As much as I hate to say it, this story isn t necessarily a new one In fact, it s been told a lot of times before in Hunger Games, Divergent, All Rights Reserved and so on the only difference is the surface level modifications There s diversity, an illegal citizen main character, and a cool mix of science and magic But that doesn t make up for the fact that this is still a girl inspires revolution story What makes this story new and exciting is less of A THING and of a novelty It s awesome to have a gay Merlin and a pansexual love triangle, but without a compelling story that keeps the reader s interest, the whole thing just starts to feel dull A gay Merlin was one of the main reasons I wanted this book in my life and by the end I just couldn t bring myself to feel excited any Additionally, it felt like the authors were constrained by the Arthurian elements rather then working with them The love affair between Ari and Gwen felt like it was very much only in there because of the Guinevere Arthur Lancelot thing The fact that Ari is King Arthur reincarnated is cool, but Ari BEING King Arthur doesn t have a bearing on the story What Ari does can be done without the King Arthur elements In fact you can honestly take out all the Arthurian stuff and still be left with a fairly coherent, if not bland, YA Dystopian The fact that this is a King Arthur retelling is arbitrary at best and at worst an excuse to already have characters for Ari to rely on without needing to build a rapport with one another Kay is her brother Gwen is the love interest Lam is a loyal knight Jordan is another knight Val is a third knight All of these characters have a defined personality, but that personality is in a sense a variation on loyal That s what these characters are, loyal knights because they were destined to be like that because of the reincarnation thing And boy did THAT get old Merlin has done this conceivably 42 times and it all felt contrite Why does it have to be reincarnation Why does the story have to repeat By the time the book ends there hasn t really been a change in the world or in the cycle It s all set up for the sequel I think that the authors wrote themselves into a corner with the reincarnation angle, because it meant they couldn t stray from a bare bones Arthurian plotline And that sucks because I know these authors and they are better then this. The writing was difficult too The action would pick up, and then there would be an obvious lull, then pick up, then lull The actions scenes seemed like they were the only tense or emotionally charged scenes in the entire book while the character introspection just feltlong There s a whole plot about rescuing Kay and Ari s parents from a prison planet It s built up through half the book, accomplished, and then the parents are dumped at a hospital until the dramatic conclusion Ari s main motivation, accomplished and resolved with 40% of a book left Because of that, Ari s actions and character for the rest of the book felt hollow because her reason for moving forward had been resolved The authors tried to make Gwen and her people her new motivation, but it felt so forced because that s what their relationship felt like They didn t feel natural and so their feelings didn t either I wanted to love this I wanted to sing it s praises from the rooftops But I can t do that I just can t Once Future just had too many issues I ll still go forward with the sequel, because the Merlin Ari dynamic is very well crafted and I am genuinely curious to see what happened to them, but I ll be approaching it with far caution then I did this flag 1 likeLike see review Jan 18, 2019 Emma Spence Hirst rated it really highly addictive Sci fi story It was well woven in and I loved how it was done, the mythology felt very spot on to the original tale. The romance in this book and me swooning and feeling all happy and gooey inside Everything this book set up made it very fast paced and highly addictive and therefore easy to fly through I finished this in 2 sittings, what can you ask for.Critiques.The book is very, very fast paced sometimes too much and I did feel like sometimes I did miss out on certain things and I would have to go back and reread sections because otherwise I got a bit lost I also feel that sometimes it reads very fanfictiony as it s very fluffy and sometimes predictable The characters also at times very childish but I did feel that was expected from a YA book My other main criticism was the enemy, I did feel that The Administrator could have been thought out and just overall to his character I would have liked to see a bit written and developed around him But overall I loved the concept of this enemy, and the evil itself was very realistic and anger inducingCharacters Ari I liked her character development over this book and felt she really matured over time, especially towards the end She was so fun to read about and I thoroughly enjoyed her point of view She was headstrong and hilarious and one of my favourite characters within this tale, and a well written heroine.Merlin My other favourite character in this novel I love love loved him Such a pure character, so wholesome, I stan I found his story very interesting and some of my favourite parts were learning about him before he meets this band of misfits He was another character who just grew and developed so much and so well across the time span of this book I found the concept of him growing younger with each incarnation of Arthur he meets, very very intriguing and I m excited to see how this detail pans out in book 2 Lam and Val So pure and queer I love you Val is so flirtatious I love it A particular romance in this book had me so so happy and I was rooting the entire book for it Kay I really liked him at the beginning of this story but as it progressed I liked him less and less He was meant to be the eldest brother to Ari but I felt he was very childish, I do wish that perhaps the authors wrote to his character as towards the end he felt generic and I was just done with his character Plus, this guy, NOT A GOOD BROTHER JUST SAYING Gwen Our obvious major love interest who I thoroughly enjoyed the romance she was involved in I was so so pleased at seeing a F x F romance frontly displayed within a Sci fi and generally within a book It made me feel so represented and I loved that, I rarely find a female and female relationship in a book that I loved and shipped as much as I did this one, and I was really rooting for them However, I didn t care for the romance angst towards the latter of this book, that s a personal thing for me, I do find that conflict and drama doesn t interest me and if I m honest frustrates me, but this was understandable angst because it was canonical with the Arthur tale.Morgana Such an underappreciated character and a villain that I wanted to see a hell of a lot of I love Morgana she was one of my favourites from the original Arthur tale and I m eager to see if there is any development of her character and her past in the next bookOverall thoughts and ending The ending GIVE ME BOOK 2 NOW the cliff hanger was not okay It leaves you so desperate for This book isn t even out till March so book two is so so far away Sigh and cry Overall 4.5 star rating, I really really loved this book and the I think on it, the I love it and miss reading this book Y all pick up this book cos it s definitely a 2019 beloved flag 1 likeLike Overall, Ari and Merlin really carried the story with their fantastic personalities CAN I BE BEST FRIENDS WITH THEM RIGHT NOW I loved reading this book, but it may not be the strongest when it comes to plot, timing, and mood Some books for me have the structure and originality to make a strong book, but not the sparkle that made me love it This book had the sparkle and definitely originality flag underestimate it It turns SO much on its head in a beautifully written novel rife with dragons, magic, royalty, spaceships, and all kinds of sexual tension that eloquently mirrors so many issues contemporary teens are dealing with both personally and nationally If this isn t a huge hit there is a conspiracy in the galaxy flag 1 likeLike see review previous 1 2 3 next new topicDiscuss This
